Newspaper article: Death of Alvin Tritch On Thursday night of last week at Elmira in LaGrange County occurred a tragedy that will cost the tax-payers of LaGrange quite a sum of money. This little cluster of cottages and a store or two joins the town of Stroh on the northwest, and on this occasion there was a dance in the village. Alva Tritch of Helmer, was the floor manager. During the progress of the dance one of the dagoes employed in the cement factory at Stroh came on to the floor and was promptly ordered off. Of course this angered the dago, who it is said had been drinking, and he went out and finding two of his companions, came back to the dance hall. Two of the men caught Tritch by the arms and pulled him out the door, where the third man stabbed him, Mr. Tritch dying in a few moments. The men implicated in the murder left the dying man and ran to camp where they were soon surrounded and held until the Sheriff of the county arrived and put the men under arrest, the man who did the stabbing confessing himself guilty of the murder. While this dance is said to have been of a very low order in the scale of morality, the close proximity to the dago camp only made it more dangerous and disreputable. Such a place is a mighty good one for any man or woman who has the least regard for a good name to keep away from. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Tritch in the death of their only son, and especially under such sad circumstances.(Note: A Dago is an ethnic slur that Americans used for Italians during that era)
