The Hinchcliffe family established Laurel Grove in March 1872 originally containing 145 acres and managed it for 127 years. In the 1920s, the family acquired 55 acres of their dairy farm for adjacent land development. Today the cemetery accumulates approximately 200 acres with more than 100,000 interments.
In 1939, the first mausoleum was constructed and later renovated in 1994. There is an old English-style chapel on the cemetery grounds that occupies over 300 visitors. A mausoleum chapel and crematory chapel are also on the property. In 1996, the crematory was built and serves the Northern New Jersey area.
Prior to the 1930's, the records were filed according to burial date and are listed in ancient journals. The backlog is currently being digitized and it is unknown when that process will be completed.
Throughout this nonsectarian memorial park are expanded gardens that also serve the Chinese, Islamic and Korean communities of the metro area in New Jersey and New York. Today more than 900 people are annually provided with burial and cremation services in Laurel Grove.
