Van Liew is one of the oldest cemeteries in North Brunswick Township. It's history began as a family burial ground on the Van Liew farm, dating back to the 1700's. Around the time of the Revolutionary War, the Van Liew family began allowing the burial of their friends and neighbors.

In 1894, the farm was sold off. The burial ground was saved and became a public non-denominational cemetery. There are no burial records prior to 1894.

Around 1966, in order to make room for new construction at the First Presbyterian Church in New Brunswick, 520 bodies from the church's cemetery were relocated to Van Liew.
