Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery is located in the City of Oakbrook Terrace in DuPage County, Illinois. It is bounded by Butterfield Road (Illinois State Route 56) on the south, Roosevelt Road (Illinois State Route 38) on the north, and Kingery Highway (Illinois State Route 83) on the east.
Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery opened in 1924 as Green Ridge Cemetery. The first advertisements for the sale of burial plots appeared in the Chicago Tribune in May of 1925. The name of the cemetery was changed from Green Ridge Cemetery to Chapel Hill Gardens in 1946, and was changed again to Chapel Hill Gardens West in 1948 upon the renaming of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Oak Lawn, Illinois, to Chapel Hill Gardens South. Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery is now a part of Dignity Memorial.
For nearly the first seventy-five years of its existence, the land on which the cemetery is situated was located in an unincorporated area of DuPage County, Illinois. During this time, the cemetery was variously referred to as being located in Elmhurst or in Oakbrook Terrace, despite the fact that it was not actually part of either municipality. The cemetery was annexed into the City of Oakbrook Terrace in February of 1997 upon mutual agreement by the city and the cemetery owner.
A funeral home was constructed on the cemetery grounds in the late 1990s.
