Sacred Heart Cemetery
Also known as Lange-Calahan Cemetery
Cut Off, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, USA
The church property was donated in 1879 by Joseph Guidry Sr. and accepted by Rev. A. M. Rochard of Holy Rosary in Larose. He is known as the pioneer benefactor of Cut Off, Louisiana.
The parish was originally sited at Cote Blanche. The cemetery was established in 1905 after the outbreak of Yellow fever. At that time it was known as the Callahan/Lange Cemetery. It then became the Cote Blanche Cemetery, then Sacred Heart Cemetery. It is known for its reserved section for infants who died before baptism.
In the Fall of 1899, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart was built and dedicated. The property was donated by Joseph Guidry, Sr. and built by the fishermen of the area. Pews were sold and proceeds used to pay for the building.
A new cemetery was started in 1924, when the parish was formed. Father Barbier had all the old cemetery paved, greatly enhancing its appearance. During the first year of his pastorate, Father Barbier erected a War Memorial which was formally dedicated with impressive ceremonies on Sunday November 4, 1945, honoring the heroes of the parish in World War I and World War II. The construction of the memorial entailed an expense of some $4000.
