Union Hill Cemetery
Millstadt, St. Clair County, Illinois, USA
Located in Section 11 of Millstadt Township, this cemetery was approximately 2 miles northeast of Millstadt on Illinois State Route 158. Due to annexed property, it is now located in Millstadt, IL. It is supposedly the oldest cemetery in Millstadt Township with its first burial being John Ross who died October 1, 1823. A church, known as the Union Meeting House (Methodist), was established adjacent to the cemetery in 1819. The church was destroyed by fire on March 31, 1881. A new church was dedicated in September 1904. The oldest existing tombstone is that of Thomas Jarrard who died 16 October 1823 at the age of 51 years.
"The Union Meeting House was the first house of worship, built in 1824, about two miles northeast of Centerville (Millstadt). The pastor was Rev. Benjamin Goodner. The first cemetery was there also, and the first interment was on Oct. 1st, 1823 (John Ross)." The meeting house has long since been destroyed, but the cemetery, now known as the old Union Cemetery, is still being used for a few burials, and is in a fair state of condition.
