Mount Zion Cemetery
Kilbourne, Mason County, Illinois, USA
The property for this cemetery was included in the same deed that conveyed the location for nearby Mt. Zion Church. Thomas F. and Frances Sinia Blunt sold three acres for the church and the acre for the "public burying ground" for one dollar by a deed dated November 12, 1850. [vol. D, p. 84] The cemetery is referenced (and excluded) in an 1864 deed that conveyed the surrounding farm from Thomas F. and Frances S. Blunt to Thomas Blunt. [vol. R, p. 232] Mrs. Blunt died in 1864. Thomas died in 1881. Both were buried in the cemetery established on part of their farm.
A pair of additional deeds were filed over thirty years later. A quit claim deed [vol. 46, p. 554], to correct the legal description in the original deed, was filed in March 1882 by Lewis B. Ashurst and Thomas R. Blunt, deacons of the Mt. Zion Church of the United Baptists. It clarified the boundaries of the three acres for the church and the acre for the cemetery that were originally conveyed by the 1850 deed. The consideration was one dollar—paid by Thomas R. Blunt (son of the previous owners). The second quit claim deed, from Thomas R. and Jane Blunt to Mount Zion Church, was filed on the same day and again referenced the land "for a Meeting house and Public burying ground." [vol. 46, p. 555]
