Oakwood Cemetery is the second oldest cemetery in DeKalb County, dating from 1865, and was originally named Oakland, which was changed in early 1889.
On May 3, 1865, five wooded acres were purchased a half mile west of downtown DeKalb, just off the main road (North 1st Street), with its northern boundary formed by the Kishwaukee River.
Several impressive family plots adorn the landscape, with the George Gurler lot having five of its seven markers flush with the ground, which is unusual for Oakwood.
Oakwood Cemetery is still active and is owned and maintained by DeKalb Township. The cemetery is located behind the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
