Flat Rock Cemetery was originally the parish cemetery for Holy Cross Catholic Church, and was established in 1905 when Anthony Beauchamp donated one acre of land for a parish cemetery. Early burials were not recorded, and the sexton relied on his memory. Several pastors later made efforts to record the graves and exact location of burials.

In 1946, ownership of the cemetery was transferred to Escanaba Township, and the cemetery remains active. Over time obituaries have increasingly referred to Flat Rock Cemetery as the Escanaba Township Cemetery.
