The cemetery started as a private burying ground of the Prevost family with the interment of Paul Mallet Prevost's wife Jeanne Patry Mallet Prevost in 1810. In 1857, their son Lewis M. Prevost set aside that land and added a few additional acres and formed the Frenchtown Cemetery Association. It opened to public use and was incorporated as a rural cemetery on September 30, 1857. Over time, more land was added bringing its size to 14.5 acres. There are approximately 5000 graves among the avenues of the cemetery. Street signs are posted at 3rd Ave & Main Ave.
