Add PhotosFred came to America about 1840 with his younger brother, Joseph Steevens Farrand (born in 1817). Fred soon married his first cousin Eliza Robinson whose mother Elizabeth Steevens was a sister of Rebecca Steevens Farrand. Eliza's parents lived in Hudson, Columbia County, New York and Fred settled there. Eliza soon died and Fred remained a widower for many years and worked in the grain and brewery business with his former father-in-law who was also his aunt's husband.
Eventually Fred went to Munith because he had acquired the property of the old dairy-stock farm. He remarried late in life to a woman much younger than himself and they had a son Frederick Farrand III who died at the age of 15.
Around 1890, Frederick Farrand, Jr.'s nephew William Peake Farrand (a son of Joseph Steevens Farrand and a twin of Frank Farrand) left Hudson, New York and went to Munith, Michigan to become associated with his uncle in the running of the farm. WPF eventually came into ownership of the farm where he ran a very successful business until a fire in the barn, or barns, brought the business to ruin.
Find the location of the old farm and you have the general location of the old burial area. It may be close to the area where the house was.
Written by Mrs. Barbara Farrand Doxey, a granddaughter of Frank Farrand through his son Frank Freeland Farrand.
The Plat Book of Jackson County, Michigan, compiled and published by the American Atlas Company, Chicago, 1894, shows a map of the property of William P. Farrand in Henrietta Township on page 24, which is titled "Henrietta, Parts of Townships 1 & 2 South, Range 1 East of the Meridian of Michigan". The map shows that the property of William P. Farrand includes the south half of Section1 and much of the north half of Section 12. The residence is shown as being off a drive from Territorial Road near the north boundary of section 12 within section 12 halfway between the east and west boundaries of the section 12. The cemetery map location is approximate.
