The churchyard of St Mary's Church, Harrow on the Hill, is in a perfect position at the top of Harrow Hill with its extensive views of the area. The churchyard sprawls down the slope and contains an interesting collection of gravestones, many of which are of a cross design. There is a large Leighton family tomb with unusual mosaic work – the last resting place of the artist John Leighton (1822-1912). Memorial plaques inside the grade 1 church commemorate the headmasters of Harrow School, these include one for the founder of the school, John Lyon. Whilst at Harrow School the poet Lord Byron enjoyed resting on the top of the tomb of John Peachey. It is now enclosed with a railing and a stone tablet with words written by Lord Byron are reproduced below it.His daughter Allegra who died at the age of 5, is buried in the churchyard in an unmarked grave.
