This cemetery is owned and operated by the Bishop Janes United Methodist Church. It was the first non-profit and non-sectarian cemetery in the Garden State.
In 1858, 4½ acres of land were acquired by Reverend George Freeman Dickinson and passed it over to the Trustees of Methodist Episcopal Church. Ferdinand Van Dorn drew the original plans and were approved. In 1904, 15¾ acres were added in the cemetery.
After the origin of the Basking Ridge United Methodist Church was established on Thursday, June 2, 1853, another church was erected in 1900 and named after Bishop Edmund Storer Janes.
In 1984, the township approved the church to sell off 4 acres for a five-home subdivision and the funds from the sale went directly to support the cemetery maintenance. 5 graves on the subdivided land were moved and reinterred after permission was granted by the decedent's families.
For more information regarding the cemetery, please contact the sales director and cemetery manager Brett Hodges.
