Brighton General Cemetery sits on 12 hectares (30 acres) in the Melbourne suburb Caulfield South. It was planned in 1853 and the first burials commenced here on 14 October 1855 (one of the oldest Melbourne cemeteries outside of the city centre). Over 70,000 people have been interred here since it opened. The cemetery is operated by the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, however genealogical, plot and burial information is searchable via Brighton Cemetorians who work actively with SMCT to keep cemetery records up to date and accessible. Open daily during daylight hours for visitors, with entry possible from either North Road, or Hawthorn Road entrances with free parking on-site and in adjacent roads, and tram access from city using route 64.
