Cherokee Cemetery
Cherokee, Butte County, California, USA
Cherokee Cemetery is on the west side of Cherokee Road 3 miles from Highway 70 in Cherokee, Butte County, California. It is 15 miles from Oroville, California. The cemetery serves the town itself, nearby Table Mountain, and the Pentz farming area. The first burial was of William Morgan on 17 Aug 1857. Although he was buried elsewhere on mining land, the body was moved to Cherokee Cemetery. The Cemetery had a legal beginning when it was recorded in Sacramento on 16 Dec 1879 by Judge Robert Clarke. Land around the cemetery was homesteaded by Edward J. Campbell, who signed an agreement with Trustees of Cherokee cemetery in June 1900 that upon receiving the patent, he would deed the land within the cemetery fence. In May of 1936, Bert Paxton surveyed, mapped and numbered the lots for an official map. In Sept. 1939, Mr. Robbie of Chico Granite and Marble Works built the first Vinton (Vintin) vault with six crypts and a doghouse added for Maggie. The second vault was started in 1940 over the graves of Thomas, Ruth and Marcus Vintin and was never finished because of a death and disagreement of heirs. In 1950 Mrs. Nettie Vaughan planned and started a water fund and an electric pump and pipe was purchased with the money. Mrs. Nettie Kroepelin Threlkeld donated the entrance gate in 1950 in honor of Cherokee pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Campbell donated an acre of land providing a total of 558 graves. Since then, another acre has been donated by the Campbells. Paradise Cemetery book, by Paradise Genealogical Society, 1863-2000
