The churchyard is an unincorporated cemetery attached to the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square (founded in 1772 or 1774 as the First Presbyterian Church of Nottingham Square). The first interment was Betsy Hutchinson (155243207) who died 10 October 1786.


Records for the east section appear to have been kept by family members. In the late 1860s the church laid out cemetery lots on the site of the second church building and began selling deeds. The west section was added in 1936, and a memorial garden was opened in 2016. There are about 1,100 known interments. All existing markers have been photographed; the remaining graves are not marked. In 1876 a tornado destroyed or damaged more than 200 gravestones, rendering many inscriptions illegible.


Visitors are welcome from dawn to dusk. Street parking is available along Herbert Avenue and in the church lot across Nottingham Way. The church holds its Easter Sunrise worship in the memorial garden.
