The Pine Grove Cemetery was incorporated in 1961, but the first burial was over a hundred years before. The first burial that is still marked would be that of a child, Catherine Rasp, who died in 1853. The beginning of a cemetery was established through a community effort, whether that be through the church, a private family, or the community as a whole. The cemetery was just as important to the community as the church, school, businesses, and homes. The land that a cemetery is placed on is usually chosen for the reason that it is not good farming land, usually sloped and rocky. The cemetery is also located in a centralized area that is near the community but also apart from the homes of the community. The Pine Grove Cemetery was not part of any of the churches that were established in the Punch Bowl. At one point the cemetery was called Union Cemetery and the area around it was called Delk. Times have changed but the cemetery remains as a remnant of the past.
