This cemetery located in Liberty township, Henry county, Indiana is located on CR #500E, about one half mile south of SR #38. It was set aside as a neighborhood burial grounds in 1844 by Thomas Batson, naming Jacob Crane, William Bland and John Odom as the trustees of the Batson cemetery. It formerly being a family cemetery there had been earlier burials here. Stephen Batson in 1832. Samuel Batson died in the summer of 1833, legend says he was the one who started the cholera epidemic of 1833 in Henry county and was the first person to die in Indiana from the cholera. Anna Baker, wife of John Baker has the oldest known tombstone in Henry County, she was supposedly re-interred here from the old Devon cemetery where Christopher Long is interred. Her husband John Baker is still buried in the old Devon cemetery, which has been plowed over.
The old cemetery is still used occasionally for burials and there are still lots for sale. At one time this cemetery was thought to be the most beautiful cemetery in the county. It is gradually going down hill and not receiving the kind of care it used to get.
Tom Hamm originally recorded this cemetery in early 1970. At that time he recorded burials only 1920 and before for a total of 625 burials. This latest recording was done in June of 2005 with a total of 1,187 burials. Being one of the oldest cemeteries in Henry county there are several stones that could not be read at all, broken, eroded missing pieces and such but most stones are in good condition, just a few in the older part could not be recorded. And naturally everything is not perfect and there will be unintentional mistakes.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 2, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (01 April 2006), gives the primary cemetery name as Batson Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-33-86 (Batson).
The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Batson Christian Church and Cemetery is 065-451-45034 with the dataset compiled in 1993.
