The cemetery's history began on August 8, 1860, when the Spring Hill Cemetery Association purchased the initial 10-acre tract of land. The land was acquired from Alexander B. Simmons for a sum of $100.
On May 20, 1957, a powerful tornado went through the cemetery, causing extensive damage to many monuments. Consequently, numerous headstones have either vanished entirely or been reduced to fragmented stone remains.
