As its name implies, the church probably had its beginnings in a series of camp meetings held on the site west of Fayetteville beginning some time before 1841, when the name Camp Ground Church first appears in the records of the First Quarterly Conference held at Mossy Springs. The earliest interments in the cemetery date to around 1848.
