In 1860, Twelfth Street Friends decided to establish a burial ground outside the city limits in Upper Darby Township They contracted to build a house and stable, hired a caretaker to live in the house, and laid out lots for family burials which they called the Friends South-Western Burial Ground.

Twenty years later the three Center City meetings purchased two adjacent acres, laid out single grave lots, and called the addition the Friends Marshall Road Burial Ground. At the same time, a stone and iron fence was extended around the block and both burial grounds. Today they are managed as one.
