This historic church was built in 1856. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital for the wounded from the battle of Second Manassas/Bull Run as well as other battles. Clara Barton was here during that battle tending to over 3,000 wounded soldiers. It was here that she thought of the idea for the Red Cross. Union General Philip Kearny's funeral was held here who died in nearby Chantilly at the battle of Ox Hill in 1862. General Robert E. Lee allowed Kearny's body, horse, and acroutements to pass through enemy lines here.
