Geiger Avenue Cemetery
Also known as Confederate Home Cemetery, SC State Hospital Cemetery, White Asylum Cemetery
Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA
The fenced area within the cemetery is known as Confederate Home Cemetery and contains the graves of Confederate soldiers and their spouses. The South Carolina Confederate Soldiers' Home was previously located in front of the cemetery on the corner of Confederate Avenue and Bull Street. The Home opened in 1909 and was built on land owned by the State Hospital. The Home was closed in 1958.
Surrounding the fenced area of the cemetery are the graves of white State Hospital patients. There is a separate cemetery for African Americans about a mile away on Slighs Avenue as the hospital was segregated in both life and death.
Burial information, including plot number, is from the "South Carolina State Hospital Cemetery Survey Index" that is available online at the Richland County Public Library's website. If family members did not purchase grave markers, the State Hospital only marked graves with the plot number.
As of November 13, 2013, all of the gravemarkers with names have been photographed and added to Find A Grave.
