The Livingston Old City Cemetery began in 1840 with the burial of four-year-old Josephus Choate, son of Moses and Ursula Choate. Later, a 1-1/2 block of land, including the Choate family cemetery, was set aside for religious and educational purposes. The Masonic lodge and church which were built on that property eventually relocated, leaving an entire block for the cemetery. By 1906, when the Forest Hill Cemetery Association was established, burials in the Old City Cemetery had mostly ceased. The last interment took place in 1940. At least 25 Republic of Texas citizens are buried here.
