McNeil Cemetery
Also known as Priceville Cemetery
Priceville, Grey County, Ontario, Canada
Dr. Hugh McNeil of Chicago donated this 5 acres formerly owned by his parents and on which he was born. Donated to this community as a public cemetery from which the Priceville Public Cemetery Co. was formed at a meeting held in St. Columbus Church on August 20, 1915 under the chairmanship of Donald McMillan with Peter Muir as Secretary. The cemetery was to be known as the McNeil Cemetery in honour of it's benefactor. This memorial plaque was dedicated at the 31st Anniversary Remembrance Services Sun. Aug. 2, 1981.
The property of his parents, Alexander and Mary McNeil, was donated providing (1) that he could have first choice of a plot. He chose the area where his parents home was situated. (2) That the remains of his parents be taken from the Pioneer Cemetery and interred in the new Cemetery, (3) that their monument be moved and set on a good base, (4) that one half acre be set apart as a "Potter's Field" where the poor could be buried.
In 1916, John L. MacDonald, Wm. Mather & Hermie MacLean planted maple trees on three sides of the cemetery and carried the trees on their backs from Wm Mather's hardwood bush. In 1939, perpetual care of plots was first introduced. August 2, 1981 at the Annual Memorial Service of McNeil Cemetery, a plot was unveiled by Rev. Laurie Sutherland, " in honor of doctors to McNeil and the Pioneers of the District."
