Old Mount Zion may be the oldest cemetery in Cross County, Arkansas. The once abandon and neglected resting place for
pioneers, slaves, land owners and Civil War veterans was restored in 2005 with the help of the inmates of Cross County.
Records show that the land the cemetery is on was part of 18 acres donated to the Mount Zion Methodist Church in the 1800's by Col. David Cross. In 1885 the church building was disassembled and moved to Vanndale. By 1940 the cemetery was in a state of disarray as underbrush grew over many headstones. Cows got into the cemetery and destroyed many of the older headstones.
Restoration attempts were made in 1989 and more than 400 unmarked graves were discovered.
Old Mount Zion Cemetery contains both white and black burials. It is located 2 ½ miles southeast of Vanndale. From Highway 1B in Vanndale, follow County Road 365 for ½ mile, turn left on County Road 372 and follow the road for 2.2 miles, turn right onto County Road 367. Follow 367 for ½ mile. The locked gate to the cemetery will be on the right.
