The first burial in the Williams Cemetery was Mahala (Barton) Williams who died in childbirth 4 August 1859 and was buried on her husband's farm along with their infant daughter, also named Mahala. This is a family cemetery, and all burials here are related by birth or by marriage.

On September 8, 1893, John Williams deeded this plot of land on his Miller County, Missouri farm to the Mt. Zion Grave Yard in exchange for $1. Mt. Zion was the name of the church the family attended in Kentucky before immigrating to Missouri. This property is described as follows: Beginning at the section corner of sections 25 and 36 in township 39, range 14, thence south 86 degrees and 30 minutes east, 11 rods and 79 inches to the section corner of 30 and 31 township 39, rage 13, thence south 3 rods 5 feet 3 ½ inches to the place of beginning. Contains in the aggregate ¼ acre more-or-less. The land hereby conveyed is intended to be used for a graveyard only.
