This cemetery is associated with a long-standing and historic church of the Ruston community, Mays Chapel, now Mays Chapel CME Church. It is a historically African-American church which is located a short distance away from the cemetery. Burials here date back to the late 1800s (and likely earlier). A cemetery survey done in 1980 noted that there were 166 "sunken grave sites" and 10 grave sites marked only with concrete slabs, suggesting there are countless unknown burials within this grounds. The Mays Chapel CME Church hosts volunteer cleanups of the cemetery occasionally.
