Mill Creek Cemetery

Mill Cemetery

This cemetery was used from the 1850's-1950's. Mill Branch or Mill Creek was the first name of the cemetery. This cemetery contains approximately 77 graves with 49 marked with a headstone.

This is the final resting place of Col. M. T. Johnson, Father of Tarrant County. The cemetery located on Arkansas Lane in Arlington, Texas was first established as (1)Mill Branch Cemetery, with the earliest known burials in the 1850's. Members of the Eli Ford and Johnson family were buried in this cemetery. Col. Johnson was originally buried in the State Cemetery in Austin, but in 1870 his family moved his remains to the family plot in Arlington. In 1936 the State of Texas marked his gravesite with a Centennial Marker. In the 1950's descendants of Johnson petitioned the court to officially name this small section the (2) M.T. Johnson Family Cemetery. (3)The larger part on the west side of the cemetery was the only place in Arlington where black citizens could purchase burial plots from 1900 to the 1950's. The earliest marked grave is that of Alma Johnson, 1916. There are records of many others, though many remain unknown and unmarked. The Arlington Historical Society now owns the cemetery and is working hard to restore it to its proper place in Arlington's history.
