Add PhotosWith the Churchyard at St Mary, Ware filling up in the 1800s the town decided it needed to build a new cemetery on the edge of town and in 1849 land was acquired from Joseph Chuck, a local maltster (who is buried within the grounds) to do so. A chapel was designed by local architect Thomas Smith, who also designed Hertford Hospital and Wareside Holy Trinity Church. In reality there were two chapels built during 1854-55, one for Anglicans and the other for Nonconformists, joined at right angles. A chapel lodge at the entrance was completed in 1884. By the 1990s the chapels had started to deteriorate and were sold by the council to a private developer who turned them into separate residences. The chapels are now Grade II listed with Historic England. Burials no longer take place here, (this happens across the road in the new cemetery), but cremated remains are allowed in a corner of the old cemetery.
