Peredelkino Cemetery
Also known as Переделкинское кладбище
Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrug, Moscow Federal City, Russia
The Peredelkino Cemetery is one of Russia's most famous literary cemeteries. It is situated in south-west Moscow on the high bank of the Setun River.
The cemetery dates back to at least the 17th century, when it was a churchyard belonging to the village of Lukino. The necropolis's modern fame dates back to 1934: that was when a summer cottage settlement for creative intellectuals — Peredelkino — was founded nearby. Many writers and cultural figures who lived here wished to be buried nearby. From the 1960s onwards, the cemetery began to take shape as a ‘literary necropolis'.
In the early 2000s, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was built next to the cemetery — a white-stone chapel in the Old Russian style.
A memorial has been erected on the site of a mass grave for soldiers of the Great Patriotic War; there is also a section containing the graves of early Bolsheviks and the graves of Heroes of the Soviet Union.
Among those who found their final resting place at Peredelkino Cemetery are:
Writers and poets:
Boris Pasternak (Nobel Laureate, 1958);
Korney Chukovsky;
Robert Rozhdestvensky;
Yevgeny Yevtushenko;
Arseny Tarkovsky (father of the world-famous director Andrei Tarkovsky);
Margarita Aliger;
Lydia Chukovskaya and others.
Scientists and public figures:
Dmitry Blagoy (literary scholar and Pushkin specialist);
Sergey Navashin (academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences);
Yuri Shchekochikhin (journalist, politician) and others.
Artists:
Vadim Sidur (sculptor);
Kirill Sokolov (painter);
Iosif Raevsky (People's Artist of the USSR) and others.
Sporting figures:
Yefim Geller (one of the leading grandmasters of the 1940s–1960s);
Marita Katushova (Olympic volleyball medallist) and others.
Military figures and Heroes of the Soviet Union: N. P. Babanakov, A. P. Kositsyn, A. P. Martynov and others.
A cenotaph to the film director Andrei Tarkovsky has also been erected in the cemetery.
