Hong Kong Cemetery was consecrated in 1845. Over 12,000 people have been interred here over the years; however, numerous burials have been lost or relocated over the decades. There are approximately 7,800 names carved onto the gravestones, ossuary tablets, and memorial monuments, including 200 or so Japanese graves found chiefly in Sections 26, 34 and 35. There are also a number of illegible gravestones, ossuary tablets marked "Unknown," unmarked burials, and graves marked only by a number.

Notable interments include business magnates Sir Robert Ho Tung and Sir Catchick Paul Chater as well as missionaries such as Karl Gutzlaff, Henrietta Hall Shuck, and Theodosia Dean. Detailed information about many people buried here can be found in the book Forgotten Souls by Patricia Lim.

The cemetery office is closed on Sundays, but the cemetery is open every day.
