Saint Mary's Cemetery in Lebanon, Pennsylvania is the historic Catholic burial ground associated with Saint Mary's Parish, one of the oldest Catholic communities in Pennsylvania. The parish traces its origins to an early Catholic mission established between 1710 and 1719, when Irish and German Catholics settled in the region decades before the town of Lebanon was formally laid out.
The first Catholic chapel in Lebanon County was built between 1735 and 1752 on donated land in North Lebanon Township, and a cemetery was established beside it. This early burial ground served the mission community until the construction of the first Saint Mary's Church in 1810–1812 on North Eighth Street in Lebanon.
When the new church was completed, burials were transferred from the old mission cemetery to the newer Saint Mary's Cemetery in Lebanon. A representative of the parish confirmed that individuals interred in the original mission cemetery were moved to Saint Mary's Cemetery after 1812.
Throughout the 19th century, Saint Mary's Parish grew rapidly as Lebanon expanded with the arrival of Irish immigrants working on the Union Canal and local turnpikes. The parish enlarged its church in 1846, established a parochial school in 1859, and became part of the newly formed Diocese of Harrisburg in 1868. These developments increased the size of the Catholic community and the number of burials within Saint Mary's Cemetery.
Saint Mary's Cemetery today reflects more than two centuries of Catholic history in Lebanon County. It contains the graves of early mission families, Irish canal workers, German settlers, and generations of parishioners connected to Saint Mary's Church. The cemetery remains an important historical landmark documenting the growth of Catholic life in the region from the colonial era through the modern day.
Access to the cemetery is via a gate on Chestnut Street, where there is street parking.
