Hopewell Church Cemetery
Also known as Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery
Wayne County, Indiana, USA
Also known as Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery.
Located on northeast corner of Hopewell Road & Hough Road, Wayne County, Indiana.
Originally the Methodist Church and cemetery was about 1 1/2 miles northeast in Randolph County. Locally that site became known as Old Hopewell or old lost Hopewell. Nothing remains of the site today. (see Cemetery ID: 2859811).
The church moved to its present location around the mid 1800's and established a second cemetery. From tombstone inscriptions, it would appear the cemetery was established around 1850. About 30 burials were made in that decade alone. There are a handful of headstones from the late 1840's with one from May 1845. This latter stone may be the earliest possible date for the establishment of the grounds.
Some bodies from the old cemetery may have been reinterred at the present location or at least the headstones were relocated here. There may also be burials or reburials here without headstones. The earliest headstone of which there is currently a photograph, is from 1837. There is supposedly a burial from 1819, this was probably a reinterment.
The majority of burials occur between 1850 and 1900. After 1900 the grounds were used less frequently, with only about 20 burials recorded for that entire century. This may have been due to the increasing popularity of the cemeteries at Lynn, Randolph County, and at Fountain City, Wayne County. The Hopewell Church is halfway between those two towns. The last burial recorded was in 1933.
(Note: There are a few burials listed from the 21st century. These are misplacement errors. The accompanying obituaries indicate the persons were buried at Hopewell Cemetery at the Baptist Church, Holton, Ripley County, Indiana).
