Red Mountain Cemetery

Sometimes called Southside Cemetery, it was used by the City of Birmingham from 1888 to 1906 as a place to bury the indigent dead. The cemetery contains 4,711 burials and was located south of the city on the site that is now Lane Park and the Birmingham Zoo. The graves were not removed, but decades after the cemetery ceased to be used, the park and zoo were built over the graves. While there is a database that lists plots for burials, there is no known map that shows where these plots are, making fulfilling photo requests impossible in any meaningful way.
In 2025, 304 gravesites were removed and reinterred to expand an exhibit. The Birmingham Zoo held a ceremony on January 7, 2026, to remember and honor those 304 individuals.
