The Pleasant Prairie Presbyterian Church of Coles County, Illinois was organized in 1830 by 14 members: Thomas Mayes, Agnes Mayes, Theron E. Balch, Ann Boyd, Thomas McCracken, Nancy McCracken, James Ashmore, Cassander Ashmore, Rachel Ashmore, Margaret Ashmore, William Wayne, Mary Wayne, James Logan, and Elizabeth Logan. In 1832, Zeno Campbell donated land on Indian Creek for a church building and cemetery. In 1839, the church split into the "Old School" and the "New School" which were housed in separate buildings with separate cemeteries. The original building was on 1/2 an acre in the northwest quarter of Section 12, Twp 11N, Range 8E. The second building was erected on 5 acres in the same northwest quarter. The New Indian Creek Cemetery is well-kept and accessible, whereas the Old Indian Creek Cemetery just north of this one, is now only accessible through private property and in a state of ruin.

Pleasant Prairie is also called New Indian Cemetery. There is also an "Old Indian" cemetery located just northwest of this picture and is currently uncared for and pretty much inaccessible. Many pioneers of the area are buried there. At one time (as in many cases) there was a church located just to the left near this cemetery but it burned years ago and was never rebuilt.

Picture note: The main part of the cemetery is on the left (west), with a few stones on the other side of a ravine - easy to overlook.
