This cemetery is linked to the Greater Mount Carmel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church which was started in the late 1870s. The cemetery was established in 1888 at this location. Its founding pastor, Reverend George Washington Ghoulston is buried here. The oldest marked grave is that of Mary Jett who died in 1898. The cemetery predates the first sanctuary which was erected next to the cemetery in 1912. Previous to building their church, the congregation would meet in Rev. Ghoulston's home or community establishments such as an Odd Fellows Lodge Hall. The congregation would need to move two more times, finally settling at its current Doraville location on 4078 Carver Dr. Source: Price, Vivian. Historic Dekalb County: An Illustrated History.
