The Memorial is an exact copy of a tower on the estate of the Marquis of Dufferin in County Down, Northern Ireland, where the 36th Division trained before embarking for France. It commemorates the 36th Division's actions on July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and is placed near the 36th's objective for the day, the German strongpoint called the Schwaben Redoubt.
