Fort Steilacoom was founded by the US Army in 1849 near Chambers Bay. It was among the first US military fortifications north of the Columbia River in what later became Washington state. The fort was constructed to protect settlers after the 1847 Whitman Mission attack. It was decommissioned as a military post in 1868 and the grounds were transferred to Washington Territory for use as a mental hospital.


Please note: This is not the hospital cemetery. Patients were interred at the nearby Western State Hospital Memorial Cemetery- sometimes called Fort Steilacoom in records. Burials after the fort's closure in 1868 were limited to family members of those already interred here. Identifiable military burials were transferred to the San Francisco National Cemetery in the 1890s.


Only a few grave markers for civilians remain in this small cemetery surrounded by a fence. The cemetery is locked. Visit building 35 and request permission to visit.
