The cemetery was established on 8th June 1936, the first burial was in 1938. The State's first crematoria, WA Norman Chapel was opened in 1955.


In June 1966 the John McLeay Chapel was added. A separate crematorium was completed in 1983, incorporating three cremators of modern design.


The Jubilee Complex was opened in November 1986; the facility combined chapels and lounges.


Offices were built at the cemetery in 1994 to house the administration and sales staff.
