The land comprising Ocklynge Cemetery was initially purchased in 1855 for £400. It was officially declared open on 1st June 1857.
In 1873 it was extended southwards towards what is now Gore Park Road and then northwards towards Eldon Road in 1892.
The Cemetery has 178 War Graves of which 134 are from the Great War. However, many more soldiers, who lay elsewhere, are remembered at Ocklynge. The Cemetery also contains the graves of statesmen, sportsmen, suffragettes and tens of thousands of local people from mayors to milkmen.
Today the cemetery is closed for new burials.
