Cedar Hill Cemetery, not to be confused with Cedar Hill Extension, is located on Lancaster Avenue in Saint John (West) and is the older cemetery of the two. Like the Extension, Cedar Hill Cemetery is administered by the Cedar Hill Cemetery office presently located at 1650 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, New Brunswick. The cemetery is situated on a 8.3 acre parcel of land (PID# 00394957), bordered by Lancaster Avenue to its north, Havelock Street to its west, Young Street to its south, and Buena Vista Avenue to its east. The Hillcrest United Baptist Church is also adjacent the cemetery, to its east. In the late 1800s, the cemetery was sectioned into parts: Baptist and Wesleyan Burial Ground and St. George's (Anglican) Church Burial Ground. Though the cemetery was predominantly a Protestant cemetery, as the cemetery expanded there was less focus on sectioning off burials according to religion. The cemetery was established in 1792, 9 years after the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists. Many Loyalist families are buried here.
A book was published by genealogist Dan Johnson in 1990 entitled "The Old Cedar Hill Cemetery and Carleton Burial Ground of Saint John West, N.B. Canada."
In the 1800's this cemetery was referred to as "The Burying Ground, Carleton" or "Carleton Heights Burying Ground." By 1895 it came to be known as Cedar Hill Cemetery.
According to the cemetery office, there are NO records available prior to the 1917 fire.
