IOOF Cemetery
Thermalito, Butte County, California, USA
Odd Fellows Home Cemetery History: The Odd Fellows Cemetery is located on a bluff out of Thermalito, which overlooks the Feather River. There were about 300 burials before the IOOF home was established in the Saratoga area. All lots except where noted are 20 feet square. North and South walks are 4 feet wide and East and West walks are 5 feet in width. Graves were marked with marble stones all almost identical in shape and size. They bear the three links of chain representing Friendship, Love, and Truth, some with the chain and others with the letters F, L and T added. Some of the marble stones ended up in the Feather River as vandals carted them to the edge of the bluff and tossed them over. In 1986, Morgan Price, a Boy Scout and his troop No. 32, cleaned up the grounds and moved stones to original positions. A map and catalogue were made at the time. The cemetery was rededicated at special services on July 4 1995. The original building of the Odd Fellows was a beautiful pretentious hotel, the largest in the Sacramento Valley. It opened in 1889 but failed to prosper. In addition to these rooms in the hotel an infirmary was built with a 40 room wing. In 1918 the hotel was torn down. The infirmary was made into a large home but with the passing of time it also was torn down. The cemetery was maintained in connection with the home. After the headquarters were moved to Cupertino, a few burials of nearby residents were added to the graveyard having obtained special permission from the Grand Lodge.
