The cemetery opened for public interments on 27th September 1898. The cemetery had two chapels: one Church of England and one Roman Catholic. The Roman Catholic Chapel was later demolished and the Church of England chapel became the Crematorium Chapel. The first cremation took place in 1959. There is a Garden of Rest for children, not shown on the map, located between 9C/11R and 16R. It was originally notated in the burial records as 11C.
