The Rising Star Burial Ground was established in 1834 following its purchase by the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1845, after the St. John Street M. E. Church's own burial ground had drawn complaints from neighboring residents, the property was acquired at a sheriff's sale and repurposed as the church's new cemetery. By 1867, arrangements were made to relocate those interred at St. John's to Rising Sun, and the site was formally renamed St. John's M. E. Church and Burial Grounds. New burials ceased around 1890, and when Eleventh Street was later constructed through the cemetery, the remains of many prominent citizens were disinterred from what had become a neglected site. A 1904 news report recorded that more than 700 individuals were ultimately reinterred at Oakland Cemetery.
