A place of worship has been on this site since 870. The church was documented in the "Domesday Book" in 1086. In 1766 a new red brick chapel was built on the ancient church site, which was enlarged in 1812 to hold a 600-member congregation. The foundation stone of the current church was laid in March of 1869, but a strike among the masons delayed the finishing of the building until 1871 with the last service being held in the old building on October 4, 1871. The next year, the old building was destroyed except for the altar. The church's name was chosen as St. Chad, who was a prominent 7th century Anglo-Saxon churchman that became abbot of several monasteries in the Kirkby area. Located left of the driveway is a war memorial, which was built to the memory of the area's military, who lost their lives during World War I and World War II. Many of these of World War I belonged to Lord Derby's Regiment. At the base of the cross is an inscription from the year 870. The Victorian church building is listed on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II. Surrounded by a fence on one border, a hedge on the other and along the front sidewalk, a wall made from stones from the old 18th century church building, the cemetery has numerous old upright markers. The markers start from the right side of the driveway, going for dozens of rows and wrapping around to the back of the church. With entire families listed on one marker, many are too old making it difficult to read a full inscription. The history of this ancient church gives an idea the number of graves that surrounds the church with many may be no longer marked. Into the 21st century, the church has remained an active Anglican Parish church. An appointment needs to be made prior to visiting the cemetery as the gate at the driveway might be locked. Unless there is an opening in a family plot,St Chad's Churchyard Cemetery is closed to new burials.
