Alexandra was established in 1866 along the banks of the Ultima Thule (U.T.) Creek after gold was discovered at what was referred to as Luckie Reef. Originally known as Red Gate and Red Gate Diggings, a post office was opened on March 15, 1867, and the town was renamed Alexandra on April 24, 1867. After gold mining became unprofitable, Alexandra relied on farming and the timber industry.
A railway line was extended to Alexandra from Koriella in 1909; it was closed in 1978, and the former station is now used by the Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum.
The Alexandra Cemetery was officially gazetted on February 19, 1869, however, burials were conducted within a couple of years before the official establishment. The cemetery began record-keeping in 1870.
In the 1980s, the cemetery was expanded east, along McKenzie Street and continued until it was bordered by Morris Street. This expansion saw the development of the lawn section for burials, and the niche walls for ashes.
