The current cemetery for Amherst was opened in 1859 with the first burials there likely just beforehand.

Previously the deceased were buried in the Old Amherst Cemetery located about 2.8 Kms north along the Avoca Rd, up Queen St into Dalton, which although shown on maps, may not be open. It seems a part of a farm but is still actually a cemetery.
