The Walcott Cemetery was established in the early 1880's with the first headstones dating back to 1882. It's a large cemetery of 4.7 acres and over 660 grave sites. The cemetery is in three sections: north, middle, and south, with the south side being the oldest. In 2021, a committee was formed to restore and renew nearly 300 gravestones and grounds that had fallen into disrepair. Along with refurbishing gravestones and renewing cemetery grounds, the seed for building a Veterans Memorial was planted.
The Hagen-Helgeson American Legion Honor Guard of Walcott performs services at seven area cemeteries every Memorial Day. It was envisioned that a Veterans Memorial would be built to honor the military veterans who were buried in these seven cemeteries. Since that time, an invitation to three other area cemeteries was extended in the mission to "Let No Veteran Be Forgotten."
