The Town of Seabrook, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, was incorporated in year 1768, and comprised six villages -- Crowtown, Seabrook Village, Smithtown,The Depot, South Seabrook, and Seabrook Beach. There are two cemeteries located within the Smithtown area of Seabrook -- the earlier established Methodist Cemetery (est. 1826) and the later established Hillside Cemetery. These two cemeteries are located side by side on adjacent tracts of land. A defining feature of Hillside Cemetery is the gentle hilly terrain, with paved driving lanes dividing each burial location section.
While many early death certificates indicate a burial location as "Methodist Cemetery" or the more generic "Smithtown"; in fact, many of these burials were actually interments on that adjacent hilly tract of land, which was acreage privately owned by the Chase family. They sold plots of land on their private property for burials, provided receipts for plot purchases, and indicated on the receipts the name as, "so-called Hillside Cemetery". Thus, a number of death certificates that indicated burial location as Methodist Cemetery or "Smithtown Cemetery," were burials actually located in the separate, adjacent, privately-owned cemetery, now deeded over to the Town of Seabrook, and named Hillside Cemetery, but the undertakers and town clerk entered the burial location as "Methodist" or simply "Smithtown".
The Historical Society of Seabrook, New Hampshire, and the Seabrook Library have reference listings for the four town cemeteries -- Hillside, Methodist, Elmwood, and Wildwood. These cemeteries are managed and maintained by the Cemetery Department of the Department of Public Works, Town of Seabrook, New Hampshire.
